Up at dawn (5a.m.) again. I wonder if I would ever tire of this view. I had a colleague at Knowsley Borough Council called Stan Newett. It was his ambition to retire early and go to live in the Lake District. He achieved his ambition but within a few months was back, living in Rainhill again. When asked why he’d given up living in Keswick to come back to Merseyside he responded that one morning he had got up and made breakfast without looking out of the window at the view of the mountains. He realised that by living there he had come, quite quickly, to take the place for granted. As a result he decided it would be better to go back to what he had done before - visiting the Lake District regularly, rather than living there. That way he would never tire of the views or take the area for granted.
